According to Asahi Shimbun I read years ago, there is a Monkey Park in Uchide. On its site was a zoo, but the cage for monkeys is all that has left. The monkey case was mentioned in Murakami’s first work, Hear the Wind Sing, when the protagonist first met Nezumi (Mouse) and they drunk-drove and hit the zoo, and the hood of the car hit the cage which woke the monkeys. Local authority has taken steps to memorize this connection between Murakami and the zoo by decorating the cage with paintings. One of the paintings there is a monkey reading Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore.
